The Iași National Theatre, also known as the Vasile Alecsandri National Theater, is the oldest national theatre in Romania and one of the most prestigious theatrical institutions.
It was founded in 1840 as the Great Theatre of Moldavia. The original building was destroyed by fire in 1888, but it was rebuilt between 1894 and 1896 by Viennese architects Fellner and Helmer.
The theatre's impressive 1000-seat auditorium boasts excellent acoustics. In 1956, it was named after the renowned Romanian playwright and poet Vasile Alecsandri. The theatre also hosts the Iași Romanian National Opera.
The building, located at 18 Agatha Bârsescu Street, is listed in the National Register of Historic Monuments.
